US Government Investigates 1 Million GM Trucks and SUVs Over Engine Failures

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a massive safety investigation into nearly one million General Motors (GM) pickup trucks and SUVs. The government agency is stepping in after receiving hundreds of complaints that the engines in these vehicles are completely failing.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The safety probe covers 997,743 vehicles built between the 2021 and 2026 model years. The issue specifically targets vehicles equipped with GM's 6.2-liter V8 gas engines, known internally as the L87. The popular models under investigation include:

• Cadillac Escalade

• Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, and Suburban

• GMC Sierra 1500 and Yukon
  
  

Why Regulators Are Stepping In Now

This isn't the first time GM has faced trouble with these specific engines. Last year, the Detroit automaker issued a major recall to fix these V8 engines, blaming a parts supplier for poor manufacturing quality. To fix the problem, GM dealerships inspected the engines, replaced broken ones, and switched the rest to a thicker engine oil.

However, the fix doesn't seem to be holding up. The NHTSA recently received 499 new complaints from drivers whose engines broke down after they had already taken their cars in for the official recall repair.

What Happens Next?

The NHTSA has officially upgraded its review to an "engineering analysis". Federal investigators will take a close look at these post-recall breakdowns to figure out if GM's original repair actually works. They will also check if newer 2025 and 2026 models are suffering from the same defects. Right now, this is just an active investigation, meaning GM has not been ordered to issue a new recall just yet.
