Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has officially launched the Prime Minister’s Youth Chromebook Scheme, a major digital education initiative designed to distribute 500,000 Chromebook laptops along with high-speed MiFi internet devices to high-achieving students across Pakistan.
The program aims to bridge the digital divide, give talented youth access to global learning tools, and ensure financial background never stands in the way of academic excellence. Over the next two years, these devices will reach top-performing students from public schools and traditional religious seminaries (madaris) strictly based on academic merit.
Key Highlights of the PM Chromebook Scheme
The initiative blends hardware, internet connectivity, and digital infrastructure to support both students and their households:
500,000 Laptops Over 2 Years: Half a million Chromebooks will be handed out across all provinces and administrative regions in Pakistan.
Integrated MiFi Connectivity: Each laptop comes bundled with a MiFi portable internet device, giving families access to digital educational resources.
Impact on 2.5 Million People: Because each MiFi connection serves multiple devices at home, government estimates indicate the scheme will extend digital connectivity to roughly 2.5 million family members.
100% Merit-Based Inclusion: The scheme covers high achievers from public schools, federal capital institutions, and religious seminaries (madaris) without discrimination.
Strategic Partnerships: Supported by the Tokyo Technology Care Foundation (TTC) and built upon local assembly partnerships with major global technology leaders like Google.
Why Is the Government Distributing Chromebooks?
During the launch event in Islamabad, PM Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that providing modern technology to the nation's youth is a fundamental responsibility of the state.
Many talented students in Pakistan face financial barriers when trying to purchase personal computers. By equipping high achievers with reliable laptops and internet, the government aims to achieve several goals:
Digital Skill Building: Allow students to learn programming, access e-libraries, participate in remote learning, and gain future-ready skills.
Inclusive Youth Development: Ensure students in rural areas, orphanages, and religious institutions receive the exact same educational technology as urban learners.
Economic Growth: Empower students to engage in online learning, freelancing, and digital creativity, converting Pakistan's large youth population into a productive national driver.
The Prime Minister also highlighted broader educational efforts, including the expansion of the Daanish School system with 27 new campuses currently under construction nationwide to provide state-of-the-art facilities for underprivileged students.
Who Is Eligible for the PM Youth Chromebook Scheme?
The initial phase focuses primarily on public school students based on their matriculation results:
Eligible Students: High-performing Grade 9 (SSC-I) students in public/government schools across Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan.
Regions Covered: Students in Islamabad (FCT), Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) are eligible from Grade 10 (SSC-II).
Selection Criteria: Candidates are chosen based strictly on academic marks verified through their respective Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE).
Exclusions: Students enrolled in private institutions are currently excluded, prioritizing public sector learners who need technology access most.
