Pakistan Authorities Declare 29 Mineral Water Brands Unsafe for Drinking

The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) has issued a serious public health alert after declaring 29 mineral and bottled water brands completely unsafe for human consumption. The decision was made following laboratory tests that showed these products failed to meet official government safety standards.

As part of its routine quality check, PCRWR collected 230 water bottles from 20 major cities across the country. The laboratory testing revealed that several popular brands contained dangerous levels of chemicals and harmful bacteria.

Main Safety Violations Found in Testing

The official report highlighted three main issues in the tested water samples:

• Dangerous Bacteria: 22 brands failed the safety test because they contained biological contamination. Drinking water contaminated with bacteria can lead to severe stomach illnesses, diarrhea, and digestive infections.

• High Sodium Content: 9 brands exceeded the allowed limit of 50 parts per million (ppm) for sodium. Drinking high-sodium water on a daily basis can be harmful, especially for individuals with high blood pressure or heart conditions.

• Excessive Total Dissolved Solids (TDS): Four brands were found with TDS levels crossing the maximum safe threshold of 500 ppm. High TDS indicates an unnatural overload of minerals and salt in the water.
  
  

Government Advice for Consumers

The testing was ordered by the federal government to keep citizens safe from unhygienic drinking water. Authorities have strongly advised everyone in Pakistan to check official PCRWR reports before purchasing bottled water and to avoid buying brands that do not meet national safety rules.
