Strategic Partnership: Pakistan and Norway Reaffirm Commitment to Deepen Bilateral Relations

In a major diplomatic milestone, Pakistan and Norway agreed on Thursday to significantly broaden their bilateral engagement across trade, green energy, climate change, and maritime sectors. The high-level meeting between the foreign ministers marks the first official top-tier diplomatic exchange between the two nations in ten years.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar welcomed Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad. Following an exclusive restricted-format dialogue, both leaders headed delegation-level discussions focused on mutual regional and global security concerns.

Expanding Trade, Investment, and People-to-People Links

During delegation-level talks, both countries conducted a comprehensive review of existing bilateral agreements and identified new areas for economic synergy. Key topics of discussion included:

• Trade and Business: Expanding commercial opportunities and supporting Norwegian firms already operating inside Pakistan.

• Climate Action & Clean Energy: Partnering on environmental protection, sustainable development, and renewable energy initiatives.

• Maritime Affairs & Education: Strengthening collaborative efforts in ocean management, shipping, and academic exchanges.

• Pakistani Diaspora: Recognizing the substantial contributions of the Pakistani community living in Norway, which serves as a vital bridge between both societies.

Norway Commends Pakistan's Mediatory Role in Regional Conflicts

At a joint press briefing following the bilateral session, Foreign Minister Eide commended Pakistan's active diplomatic contributions toward maintaining international stability during recent geopolitical volatility.

Specifically addressing the recent Middle Eastern tensions, Eide praised Pakistan’s constructive leadership and peace-building initiatives during the US-Iran conflict. He acknowledged the strategic efforts of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, DPM Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, emphasizing that prevailing regional tensions pose severe risks to global economic stability.

For his part, DPM Ishaq Dar reiterated Islamabad’s resolve to build a long-term, multi-faceted partnership with Oslo that delivers tangible economic and diplomatic results.

Historic High-Level Visit

FM Eide arrived in Islamabad earlier on Thursday for a two-day official state visit upon the invitation of DPM Ishaq Dar. Upon landing at Islamabad Airport, he was formally received by Additional Foreign Secretary (Europe) Ambassador Ayesha Ali.

This historic visit opens a fresh chapter in Pakistan-Norway relations, setting the groundwork for robust bilateral collaboration in the coming years.
