In a historic healthcare achievement, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated Pakistan's first-ever specialized heart transplant center at the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology (JIC) in Lahore. Named the Maryam Nawaz Sharif Heart Transplant Centre, this state-of-the-art facility brings advanced cardiac treatments to deserving patients completely free of charge.

This new facility marks a major milestone in public healthcare, making lifesaving surgical care accessible to citizens who cannot afford expensive medical treatment abroad.

Free Medical Care and Affordable Innovation

Heart transplant procedures are among the most complex and expensive medical treatments globally, often costing upwards of $50,000. Under this new government project:

  • 100% Free Treatment: Eligible patients will receive complete heart transplant care without paying any out-of-pocket expenses.

  • Cost Reduction via Modern Technology: By introducing advanced Chinese technology, the institute aims to lower operational costs down to around $10,000 per surgery, allowing the state fund to serve more patients over time.

  • Dedicated Healthcare Fund: The Punjab government has set up a specialized financial fund to support ongoing surgeries and long-term care.

World-Class Facilities and Advanced Equipment

During her walkthrough of the facility, the Chief Minister inspected several key operational units. The 250-bed institute features modern medical systems designed for zero-infection operating environments:

  • Modular Operation Theatres: Outfitted with cutting-edge heart-lung machines.

  • Advanced Diagnostics: High-end Tesla MRI machines, advanced catheterization laboratories (Cath Labs), and diagnostic rooms.

  • Hybrid Cath Labs: Integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, allowing instant conversion into active operating theatres for emergency surgeries.

Expanding Healthcare Infrastructure Across Punjab

The opening of the Jinnah Institute of Cardiology comes as a relief to the growing population of Lahore, significantly reducing the heavy patient workload on the existing Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC).

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari highlighted that this facility was built in record time to address emergency health needs. She also shared that upcoming projects include the inauguration of the 1,000-bed Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital and the completion of the new Cardiology Hospital in Sargodha.
