MURREE — Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supreme Leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a key high-level consultative meeting in Murree on Sunday to finalize strategies for government formation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
The meeting focused on nominating top leadership positions and allocating reserved seats following the completion of the regional elections.
Key Nominations and Leadership Race
Participants in the session discussed shortlisted candidates for several critical posts, including the Prime Minister of AJK, as well as specific reserved assembly seats:
Prime Ministerial Candidates: PML-N Regional President Shah Ghulam Qadir emerged as a leading contender for the premier post. Senior political figures Tariq Farooq and Waqar Noor are also under consideration.
Women's Reserved Seats: Prominent nominees under consideration include Seharish Qamar, Maryam Kashmiri, Nasira Khan, and Nisara Abbasi.
Overseas Kashmiri Seat: Candidates being reviewed for the single overseas reserved seat include Ahsan Danish, Abdul Rehman Arain, Raja Wasim, and Raja Javed.
Election Outcome and Seat Breakdown
Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Tariq Fazal Chaudhry confirmed that PML-N has secured a strong position across all three phases of the AJK elections.
According to party tallies:
Directly Elected Seats: PML-N won 24 general seats.
Reserved Seats Formula: The party expects to gain 6 additional reserved seats (3 seats for women, along with seats allocated for overseas Kashmiris, technocrats, and religious scholars).
Total Assembly Strength: PML-N is projected to reach 30 seats in the incoming 53-member legislative assembly.
Next Steps for Assembly Formation
The AJK Legislative Assembly session is scheduled to convene next week. Newly elected members will take their oaths, followed by official voting for reserved seats, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir.
