In a major move toward digital innovation and self-reliance, the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has officially launched a new domestic, chipless Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) featuring an advanced, secure QR code.

The new identity document is designed to streamline verification processes across public and private sectors while eliminating dependence on foreign microchip imports.

Locally Manufactured with Enhanced Security

The newly designed polycarbonate identity card is locally developed and produced in Pakistan through the National Security Printing Company (NSPC) in Karachi. Formally approved by the federal government in February 2026, the updated format aligns with modern security protocols and domestic industrial capabilities.

Instead of an embedded microchip, the card utilizes a machine-readable QR code containing essential personal details and the holder's photograph. Authorized personnel can instantaneously scan this code using a standard smartphone paired with NADRA’s PakID mobile application.

Key Features of the New QR-Code CNIC

  • Bilingual Personal Information: The cardholder's name and residential address are printed in both Urdu and English.

  • Special Designation Symbols: Features distinct visual badges identifying senior citizens, persons with disabilities, organ donors, and residents of Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AJK).

  • Family Identification: Includes the cardholder's designated family number.

  • Upgraded Security Layers: Integrates modernized visible and concealed security measures to counter counterfeiting and data tampering.

  • Streamlined Data Entry: Enables banks, law enforcement, and utility institutions to scan details directly into digital databases, significantly reducing manual data-entry errors.

Solving the Chip-Reader Limitation

NADRA originally launched the chip-based Smart National Identity Card nearly 14 years ago. However, widespread adoption faced operational hurdles, as physical card readers and supporting hardware were rarely available outside major institutions.

The new QR-based framework resolves this infrastructure bottleneck. Service providers—including banks, telecom operators, hospitals, Pakistan Railways, and provincial police forces—will be provided with scanning software, allowing quick verification via standard smartphones and optical readers.

Phased Issuance Schedule & Validity of Old Cards

The transition to the new QR-code card will occur in structured phases:

  1. August 14, 2026 Onward: The QR-code polycarbonate card will initially replace the standard non-chip CNICs previously printed on Teslin paper material.

  2. January 2027 Onward: The format will expand to cover all identity card categories, including the National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and Juvenile Cards.

  3. Later Phase: The Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will transition to the QR-code design in a subsequent rollout.

Important Note for Citizens: Existing identity cards will remain fully valid until their printed expiration dates. Citizens are not required to renew or replace their valid current cards immediately.
