In an exciting development for medical science, Moderna and Merck have reported major success in a large-scale clinical trial for a personalized skin cancer vaccine. The new treatment, named Intismeran, is an mRNA vaccine designed specifically for individual patients to prevent skin cancer (melanoma) from returning or spreading after surgery.

Following the announcement, Moderna’s stock surged by around 150%, marking one of the company's biggest stock gains since its COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough.

How Does the Personalised Cancer Vaccine Work?

Unlike traditional vaccines that protect against infectious viruses, this experimental mRNA shot works as a tailor-made treatment for people who have already undergone surgery for high-risk melanoma.

  1. Custom Design: Scientists examine a piece of the patient’s removed tumor to map out its unique genetic fingerprint.

  2. Training the Immune System: The mRNA vaccine carries step-by-step instructions that teach the patient's immune system to recognize and fight off any remaining cancer cells.

  3. Combined Strength: Patients receive the customized vaccine alongside Keytruda—a widely used cancer drug that helps immune cells attack tumors.

Key Results from the Large Phase 3 Trial

The global study tested 1,137 high-risk patients who had their stage IIB to IV melanoma tumors surgically removed. Patients were split into two groups: one received Keytruda alone, while the other received Keytruda along with the new Intismeran vaccine.

  • Lower Risk of Cancer Returning: The combination treatment met its main goal, significantly reducing the chances of the cancer coming back compared to using Keytruda alone.

  • Stopped Cancer from Spreading: The study also met its secondary goal by successfully preventing tumors from spreading (metastasizing) to other body parts.

  • No Unusual Side Effects: The test showed no new safety risks, meaning the combination was generally well tolerated.

Medical experts have called these results a landmark moment because it is the first time a Phase 3 trial has proven that an individualized mRNA vaccine can successfully improve cancer treatment outcomes.

When Will the Vaccine Be Available?

Moderna and Merck are already preparing to talk with health regulators like the U.S. FDA to apply for fast-track approval. Because the treatment holds a breakthrough therapy designation, doctors hope it could become available to patients as early as next year.

While pricing details have not been finalized, company leaders noted that the vaccine does not require live human cells to manufacture, which will help scale up production and keep manufacturing costs down.
